On a January 1833 excursion to New Orleans to do some business for Maximilian, Bodmer met a few Cherokee and Choctaw Indians. He reported this to the prince, who had remained in New Harmony, Indiana, and who must have been eager to hear Bodmer's descriptions. Maximilian's own first encounter with with Native Americans was not until March of that year, in St. Louis. There he was invited by General William Clark to observe a Sauk and Fox delegation that had come to plead for the release of Black Hawk, a chief who had been imprisoned after the hostilities of 1832.
