Biography: Peleg Franklin Brownell (AKA: Franklin Brownell) was a painter and educator. He was born in Bedford, Massachusetts and died in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada where he had lived and worked since 1886. His mediums included oil, watercolor, pen and ink and pastel. His subjects were landscapes, marinescapes, beach scenes, interiors, genre, family life, urban scenes, still life and portraits. The painting locations were Ottawa and its environs (Gatineau), Quebec, Algonquin Park (Ontario), Europe, Massachusetts and the West Indies. His styles were Impressionism and Realism. He studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts under Thomas Wilmer Dewing (c.1877- 1879); and in Paris (1880 - 1883), at the Academie Julian under Tony Robert-Fleury and William Bouguereau, and at the Atelier of Leon Joseph Florentin Bonnat. In addition to exhibiting with the above organizations he exhibited with the Boston Art Club and the National Academy of Design* (New York) in the 1880's and 1890's; with the Art Association of Montreal (5) from 1889 to 1917; with the OSA as a guest in 1915, 1916, 1917 and 1936; and with James Wilson and Company in Ottawa. As an important Canadian artist his work is illustrated and discussed in most books about Canadian art history. There is also the monograph, produced in conjunction with the 1998 Ottawa Art Gallery retrospective, titled North by South: The Art of Peleg Franklin Brownell,1857-1946 (1998), by Jim Burant and Robert Stacey.
