"The Knave of Hearts" by Louise Saunders. With Pictures by Maxfield Parrish; published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1925. First Edition with matching dates of 1925 on the title and copyright pages as well as the Scribner colophon at the bottom of the copyright page. Complete with all full page illustrations and partial page illustrations, plus the tail-piece, illustrated front and rear endpapers. Folio [large format, 11.1/2 x 14"].

"Knave of Hearts" is Maxfield Parrish's most elaborate work, recognized by the critics one of the most beautiful illustrated book of all time.

This is the original first edition with the high quality of color illustrations. The book was re-published a few months later in a cheaper soft-cover, spiral bound format by the Artists and Writers Guild (1925).

Louise Saunders, talented wife of legendary editor Max Perkins, teamed with one of the most popular illustrators of all time to create this unforgettable fable. Known for his beautiful coloring and humorous touch, Maxfield Parrish's work is iconic - and "The Knave of Hearts" is his ultimate achievement. Filled with 22 colorful images and lavishly finished with a full-color endpaper painting, this hardcover edition is a collector's classic to treasure.

Published in 1925, "Knave of Hearts" features 14 color plates and 9 in-text color vignettes. A huge part of what sets Parrish's art apart is the depth and saturation of color he employs- especially his blues. (Cobalt blue is sometimes referred to as Parrish blue.) His art also blends intense photographic detail with the soft romanticism of Pre-Raphaelite artists like Rossetti and Burne-Jones, what one critic refers to as "suggestiveness without loss of unflinching detail." The artist himself describes it as "realism of impression, realism of mood of the moment, yes, but not realism of things."

Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was an American painter and illustrator active in the first half of the 20th century. He is known for his distinctive saturated hues and idealized neo-classical imagery. His career spanned fifty years and was wildly successful: his painting Daybreak (1922) is the most popular art print of the 20th century.
