"Flor Garduño’s sensual black-and-white photographs reference Mexican folklore and recall ancient rituals, dreams, and poetic allegories. Garduño studied at the Academy of San Carlos (UNAM) under Hungarian photographer Kati Horna, whose surrealist style influenced the development of her own aesthetic. She abandoned her studies in 1979 to work as a darkroom assistant for Manuel Álvarez Bravo, then one of the foremost Mexican photographers. Commissioned by the Secretariat of Public Education to produce photographs for school textbooks, she traveled to remote regions of Mexico to document the lives and customs of Indigenous peoples; she would return to this subject matter in her later work. Garduño was awarded the 1992 Kodak Critics’ Photographic Prize for her photo book Testigos del tiempo (Witnesses of Time) (1992), which captures the traditional ways of life and spiritual practices of Indigenous groups throughout Latin America." - Terry Etherton.
