[ translate ]

Heading: (California - Morro Bay)
Author: Otto, Richard S.
Title: Baywood Park Estates
Place Published: [Hollywood, Calif.]
Publisher:[R.S. Otto]
Date Published: 1949
Description:

35, [1] pp. including wrappers. Illustrated from photographs; laid in is a folded color bird's-eye view of Morro Bay & surrounding area, sheet size 28.2x36 cm (11x14¼"). Booklet is 22.7x15.2 cm (9x6"), pictorial wrappers.

Scarce, upscale brochure for this upscale development on the southern shore of Morro Bay. OCLC lists five copies, dating them 1943, three of them with 31 pages noted, the other two with 35 pages. It might be that there are two different versions, or, perhaps more likely, because the wrappers are included in the pagination, they were counted differently by different cataloguers. They are not "self-wrappers," but are on different, stiffer stock than the body of the book. OCLC lists no copies with the 1949 date of the present copy, which is from the printer's slug on the inside rear wrapper (page 35).

Richard S. Otto, the son of New York banker, was man of many talents. During WWI, he worked with noted military inventor Carl Norden and later did the engineering for the engineering for the legendary Norden Bombsight. In 1921-22 he bought about 1000 acres of Moro Bay, San Luis Obispo County. He renamed it Baywood. During the years he developed Baywood community, selling the property to prospectors and investors. Over the years had sold most of them. He still owned the Baywood Lodge and Restaurant, and the Cambria Quicksilver Mine. In the early 1930's, Otto met Socialist Upton Sinclair at a meeting of the Bellamy Society. He, Sinclair and others conceived the idea of the EPIC campaign, and all registered as Democrats. Otto managed Sinclair's 1934 campaign. Sinclair was defeated by Frank Merriam in one of the most famous gubernatorial campaigns in California history.
