Scepter - Wood - Couple Vaudou Shango - Fon Nago - Benin

Ceremonial sceptres, Fon or Nago culture, Nigeria. Height: 53 cm. Superb couple of characters related to the Voodoo cults in West Africa. They represent Shango, god of war and thunder. He is prayed for his strength. The sculpture is refined and lively, the sculptor was really invested in its creation. The characters, one male and one female, are sitting and brandishing a stylized representation of an axe, the latter being the symbol of Shango. Beautiful dry patina, traces of offerings on the face of the objects. Nice pigmentation work. Some cracks on one arm which is visible on the pictures. Beautiful old and authentic pieces of collection. Circa 1950. Origin: Private collection, Italy.
