Liber Cronicarum, second edition, Gothic type, double column, 51 lines plus headline, lacking title and other leaves (wanting 1-3⁶ 4⁸, a1-2, l1-4, m1-6, n1-5, p5, q2, A5, D2-6, E1-6, F1-6, G, S1-6,T1-6, DD-1-4,D6, OO5), nearly 2000 woodcuts of various sizes, many repeated, depicting a Ptolemaic world map, popes, saints, and other religious figures, kings and emperors, mythological and fanciful creatures, natural phenomena, and bird’s-eye views of all the major cities of the known world, lacking the double-page map of Europe, light age yellowing, a little browning, some spotting and marking, dust soiling, very light damp staining to gutter or margin of leaves in a few places, circa 18 leaves professionally re-margined, with minor loss of text, only D1 & V3 heavily affected, a few other neat repairs, occasional marginalia, mostly in a contemporary hand, later calf, gilt spine in compartments, early title inked on fore-edge, re-backed, new endpapers, folio (290 x 193mm), [ISTC, is00308000; HCR 14509; Goff S-308; BMC II 370; Pr 1786; Campbell, Maps, 221 , Augsburg, J. Schonsperger, 1497.
***First Latin edition (editio princeps 1494) of the so-called "Small Schedel", richly illustrated with woodcuts by Michael Wohlgemut and Wilhelm Pleydebworff. The work describes the ‘Seven Ages’ of the world from the Creation to the Last Judgment.
Provenance. This copy was found in the old library of Fulneck Boy’s School Pudsey, in 1948. Presumably, it was brought to England by Moravians in the 18th century and so to Fulneck, where it was professionally restored and rebound.
