[Schleusing (Georg Adam)] La Religion ancienne et moderne des Moscovites, woodcut floral device to title, etched frontispiece and 4 only, of 6, figures by Bernard Picart, occasional spotting, stamp reading ‘Ksiegozbior Celin- skich z Cekowa’, later French? half morocco, small gilt armorial device with motto ‘virtus sola invicta’ on boards centre, marbled edges, corners rubbed, 8vo, Pierre Marteau, Cologne [Amsterdam], 1698. *** One of the two editions published in Amsterdam in 1698, this one under the false address of Pierre Marteau in Cologne. It is the translation of a work published in German in 1660 under the title ‘Universa religio ruthenica sive Moscovitica’. Published at the time of an increased interest of Western Europe in the Russian Empire, the book concerns the Christianisation of Russia, and describes the dogmas of the Russian Orthodox Church and its religious customs and ceremonies.
