Schoenner Magic Lantern & Slides

[ translate ]

A late 19th or early 20th-century toy magic lantern projector kit manufactured in Nuremberg, Germany. The projector is constructed with a dark-painted cylindrical tin body featuring red decorative bands, integrated brass fittings, and a brass chimney cap. The lens assembly is supported by an ornate, cast-metal figure of a stylized human form. The projector is mounted to a rectangular wooden base designed to slide into the accompanying storage case. The light source is an internal adjustable brass oil burner with a small circular wick-adjustment knob. The storage case consists of a wood-frame box covered in dark, pebble-textured paper. The front of the box retains a large, multi-colored lithographed paper label. The label depicts a family gathering to view a projection of a Middle Eastern scene. Text on the label includes "Laterna Magica", "Magic Lantern", and "Lanterne Magique" positioned vertically. Below this, it is printed "MADE IN GERMANY". At the top center of the label is a printed trademark logo featuring a six-pointed star containing the uppercase letters "J" and "S". The words "TRADE-MARK" appear above the logo and "FABRIK-MARKE" below it, identifying the manufacturer as Jean Schoenner. The set includes an assortment of original glass slides. There are four long, horizontal strip slides with multiple sequential color illustrations of animals and human caricatures, each bordered in pink paper. Two black-masked slides contain four circular vignettes each, depicting anthropomorphic animals and European landscape scenes. One of the slides depicts various animals including a lion, ostrich, and pelican. Another strip features figures in 18th-century attire. The interior of the wooden box contains built-in slots to organize and protect the slides.
