Another version of this composition was sold at Christie’s, New York, 28 January 2015, lot 140 (for $473,000). Other versions were with Galerie Georges Petit, Paris (1912) and offered at Christie’s, Amsterdam, 6 November 2000, lot 65 and 1 November 2011, lot 65. These various versions seem to have been executed by different hands, which suggests that a cartoon of this popular composition must have circulated amongst several Antwerp studios. The present painting is a fine example of the so-called ‘Antwerp Mannerism’. It is listed in the database of the RKD, The Hague, under no. 19660.
