\Artist: Schule Luca Giordano
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 5_82_63_cm
‘Der Raub der Europa, am Strand von Sidon, Mythologisches Gemälde’ from the early 18th century The oil painting can be regarded as part of previous interior design (e. g. overdoor) and attributed to the Neapolitan school of Luca Giordano due to its flat painting style. It comes from an old Italian private property and consisted of several image sequences, with this one being the only one that’s still preserved The canvas in the format 76 x 56 cm is doubled and retouched. The rare mythological representation is framed in a beautiful classicist stucco frame. Pictured is Europe, a figure of Greek mythology on the beach of Sidon. Europe is the daughter of the Phoenician king Agenor and Telephassa. Zeus fell in love with her. He turned into a bull because of his suspicious wife Hera. His messenger Hermes drove a herd of bulls near Europe playing on the beach of Sidon, which the Zeus bull kidnapped on his back. He swam with her to Matala on the island of Crete, where he changed back. Three children came from the connection with this god. Minos, Rhadamanthys and Sarpedon. On the basis of a promise of Aphrodite, the foreign part of the world was named after Europe. Shipped in shatterproof packaging in in a plywood box via DHL. For the transport of the frame, we can’t assume liability due to the fragile gold stucco, it is therefore considered a free addition!
