AN ADVENTURE OF SPIROU AND FANTASIO
Dupuis
Original cover from Spirou magazine
No. 4537, March 26, 2025. Signed. Gouache on paper
35 × 47 cm (13.78 × 18.5 in.)
In June 2021, Daniel Maghen put up for sale a large, previously unpublished drawing of the Marsupilami by Franquin. It showed the Marsupilami playing the guitar at the top of a tree, while several birds perched on its long, curling tail. Here, our Marsupilami is now depicted in the opposite position, standing upright, with his tail curving upward and once again sheltering a noisy menagerie. This cover, intended to celebrate spring, made the front page of Spirou magazine in 2025. It previewed a short story illustrated by Olivier Schwartz and written by Lewis Trondheim.
“In this springtime story, the Marsupilami defended a butterfly that was about to be devoured by a swallow. When he realized that the swallow, too, needed to feed her young, he emptied Spirou and Fantasio’s fridge to feed the birds so they wouldn’t have to kill other animals.” O.S.
