AN ADVENTURE OF SPIROU AND FANTASIO
The Memory of the Future (Vol. 57), Dupuis 2024
Original artwork No. 14, previously published in *Spirou* magazine
No. 4477 on January 31, 2024. Signed. India ink on paper
35 × 47.3 cm (13.78 × 18.62 in.)
What a joy to immerse myself once again in the atmosphere of Franquin-era Spirou. An old telephone, period attire, bare feet, the bucolic setting of Champignac Castle—and relaxation guaranteed thanks to a playful Marsupilami, perfectly showcased in the sixth panel… The only catch: it’s all fake. This reality is fabricated by an AI that keeps Spirou captive. So it will take an appearance by the real Fantasio in his dream to shatter this beautiful harmony. Hence this eighth panel, shrouded in darkness, which creates a rupture in the narrative and plunges us from dream into nightmare.
“Here, the dream is bright, and reality is dark, black. But isn’t that, ultimately, what we’re being offered today as well?” O.S.
