Schwartz OLIVIER SCHWARTZ AN ADVENTURE OF SPIROU AND FANTASIO The Death of Spirou (Vol. 56), Black and White 2024 Original illustration for an ex-libris from the first edition. Signed. India ink on paper 29.7 × 42 cm (11.69 × 16.54 in.) Olivier Schwartz’s work is peppered with references to Hergé, one of his greatest influences. For this illustration, he drew inspiration from panel 2 on page 8 of *Cigars of the Pharaoh*, when Tintin walks past the sarcophagi containing Egyptologists before discovering that two of them—which are empty—bear his name and that of Snowy. In 2024, tourists visiting Korallion are no longer confined to coffins, but to bubbles controlled by Artificial Intelligence that give them the illusion of experiencing a dream vacation. Here, Zorglub, Champignac, and Fantasio are also prisoners of these digital sarcophagi. “The Spirou figurine shattered on the floor is an allegory of his death. We’ve destroyed the Spirou of the old days. We no longer want his bellhop uniform, because he needs to be modernized.” O.S.
