Private Collection, Colorado

Scott Fraser was born in Evanston, Illinois, and studied at the Kansas City Art Institute. He is one of the leading American realist still life painters of his generation. He works in the trompe l'oeil tradition, and his paintings are known for their technical precision and their wit. Fraser combines a classical approach to painting with contemporary subject matter. He often places historical vanitas symbols beside unexpected found objects, such as flying goldfish, matchboxes and popcorn.

His compositions are built through careful preliminary drawing, and a single work can take months to complete because he stays committed to observational painting. He also plays with the picture within the picture. Works like the present lot depict reproductions of Old Master and 19th-century paintings alongside bubble wrap, tape and clips, which raises questions about how we perceive what is real.

Fraser's work is held in more than twenty-five museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, and the Denver Art Museum. He has exhibited widely, including in Reality Check: Contemporary American Trompe L'oeil Painting at the Brandywine River Museum. He is represented by Jenkins Johnson Gallery, San Francisco.
