Description Komainu often called lion-dogs in English, are statue pairs of lion-like creatures either guarding the entrance or the honden, or inner shrine of many Japanese Shinto shrines or kept inside the inner shrine itself, where they are not visible to the public. This one have open mouth and means he is pronouncing the first letter of the sanskrit alphabet, which is pronounced "a" and represent the beginning. This glazed ceramic can be identify as probable white hagi ceramic originated from the town of Hagi, Yamaguchi, in the fromer Nagato Province. Datation First half of 19th century - C. 1830 Condition Good overall condition. Professional restoration on the left front paw.
