Sculpture - Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask - Angola

[ translate ]

The Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask is an example of primitive African art originating from the Congo region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Chokwe are an ethnic group found mainly in the regions of Angola, Zambia and the DRC. The Mwana Pwo mask is one of the best known forms of Chokwe art and is considered a representation of the feminine ideal.

The mask is usually carved from wood, although other materials can also be used, such as raffia and black iron. The wood is carved to create a stylized human face, with distinctive feminine features such as almond-shaped eyes, a thin nose and tribal scarifications on the cheeks. Mwana Pwo masks are often decorated with raffia elements, such as headdresses or hanging ornaments, which add additional texture and dimension to the work.

These masks are worn during certain ritual ceremonies and festivities, notably during the initiations of young women into Chokwe society. They represent beauty, femininity and fertility, and are considered important symbols of Chokwe culture. Mwana Pwo masks also have spiritual significance, embodying ancestral spirits and playing a role in communication with the spirit world.
