Sculpture - Gothic - Oak - Early 16th century

A rare carving of an angel from a large Antwerp retable. The angel is depicted in relief, facing right. The position of his body and of the folds of his long tunic indicate that he is supposed to be flying. His hair is cut in a typical hairdo of the period. This beautiful sculpture probably found its place on the side at the top of a retable scene, each part of which was sculpted separately before it was assembled.
