Sculpture - Gothic - Oak - Early 16th century

[ translate ]

A rare carving of an angel from a large Antwerp retable. The angel is depicted in relief, facing right. The position of his body and of the folds of his long tunic indicate that he is supposed to be flying. His hair is cut in a typical hairdo of the period. This beautiful sculpture probably found its place on the side at the top of a retable scene, each part of which was sculpted separately before it was assembled. (see "Les retables anversois XVe & XVIe siècles" by the autor Hans NIEUWDORP (Catalogue Broché – 1993) Oak with some minute traces of polychrome paint. Antwerp, early 16th century (circa 1510) . Dimensions: H 15cm x W 10cm - the perspex stand is NOT included and was used for photography purposes only -
