Sculpture - Renaissance - Walnut - 16th century
An important head of Saint James the Greater, also known as Saint James of Compostela, carved in walnut with the original polychrome paint and gilding. The saint is wearing a hat with symbols or "insigniae" of his pilgrimage : a pilgrim badge with image of the saint standing ; the scallop and the begging cup with gourd and crossed pilgrim staffs. Burgundy. Renaissance. 2nd quarter of the 16th century. Condition: in fine condition with traces of age and wear. The back has been flattened in the last decades, probably to facilitate display against a wall. Dimensions: H (with stand) 40cm ; H (head) 29,5cm ; W 26cm ; D 16cm Presented on a custom-made metal stand.
