Sculpture, Saint Christopher and baby Jesus - 94 cm - Wood - Early 20th century

Wonderful and truly large wooden sculpture depicting Saint Christopher and the Baby Jesus, in excellent condition. In Greek, Christopher means “(the one who) carries Christ”. The legend speaks of a Canaanite, who worked as a ferryman on a river. He was a rough man and lived alone in a forest, of which he was the owner. One night, a boy appeared to him to be taken to the other side the river; Christopher, although big and strong, would have bowed under the weight of that slender creature, who seemed to weigh more and more with each step. The man seemed to be overwhelmed, but at last he managed to reach the other shore, exhausted. The boy revealed to the amazed ferryman that he was Christ, confessing to him that he had carried on his shoulders not only the weight of his little body, but the weight of the whole world.
