Sculpture, Sedes Sapientiae - 34 cm - Oak - 1400

[ translate ]

600 years old, rare and early example of Christian sculpture from the Rhine Valley. Beautifully carved and carved oak sculpture Sedes Sapientiae. 'Throne of Wisdom'. This type of sculpture, in which Christ sits on the lap of his 'enthroned' mother, is known under the Latin name Sedes Sapientiae. The thelogical idea behind this is quite complex. As a 'human' mother, Mary supports her son on her lap, but as Mother of God she serves as the Throne of Incarnation (incarnation) of Divine Wisdom. The meaning of the Sedes Sapientiae is therefore twofold: both the humanity and the divinity of Christ are presented in it.
\r
Gothic, Rhine Valley, ca. 1400.
\r
Originated in a time with virtually no visual culture, in which Christianity and the Church determined daily life. Such a statue will almost certainly have once stood in a church or private chapel and made a deep impression on the viewer.
\r
Commissioned with love and respect by a skilled woodcarver. The back is also beautifully gouged. The wood feels very hard, almost petrified, due to age.
\r
Condition: right forearm and hand missing. Left side with shrinkage crack, part of which has been filled, perhaps in the 19th or early 20th century. Bottom and top with old drilled holes, probably to attach the statue somewhere (in a niche or on a console) .
