Very nice sculpture of a woman in terracotta. Made by the Akan tribe of Ghana. Height: 40 cm. The Akan are an ethnic group in West Africa. Within this group are the Ashanti, Fante, Baule, and Nzema peoples of Ghana and Ivory Coast. They speak the eponymous Akan. From the 15th century to the 19th century, the Akan dominated the gold mining, gold trade and slave trade in the region. They are known for their gold weights, which were made using the lost wax casting method. Branches of the Akan include the Abron and the Afutu.
