The larger species have been hunted and traded for their shells, meat and eggs for centuries. In Southeast Asia, these ancient creatures range in size from small, mysterious terrapins that hide in muddy forest streams to giant sea turtles up to 2 meters long that navigate the globe.
Today there are around 300 species of Chelonia, around 80 of them in Southeast Asia.
