Antique painting, oil on canvas, from the 17th century, depicting The Adoration of the Shepherds. Splendid and evocative painting, whose style and peculiar iconography immediately evoke comparisons with the style of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione known as Grechetto. In fact, a similar composition, preserved in the church of San Luca in Genoa, belongs to the master. The canvas proposed here highlights a quality of drafting and a refined execution technique and in which the author demonstrates excellent talent, while the analysis of the cretto suggests a dating compatible with the period of activity of the workshop and of the first followers, suggesting the attribution to an author of the Genoese school to be plausibly sought among the pupils and followers of the master. Among these, a version of the same scene attributed to Paolo Gerolamo Piola (1666/1724) is kept at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo. Framed in a beautiful gilded frame, which has slight defects and shortcomings. In fairly good general condition considering the age of the painting, there are some small scattered restorations and some unveiling and cracking of the pictorial surface. There are no conservation problems and the original canvas has an old relining that does not seem to need any interventions. A fine crackle is visible compared to the time. The frame was probably replaced at the time of the rewind. Measurements of the canvas: 83 x 92 cm. Frame size: 96 x 105 cm.
