Scuola Italiana (XVII) - Matrimonio mistico di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria

[ translate ]

Ancient painting representing "The mystical marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria with the Child Jesus", a subject in which the greatest Italian masters in the history of art have attempted: from Raphael to Michelangelo Buonarroti, from Artemisia Gentileschi to Correggio, from Parmigianino to Paolo Veronese, from Caravaggio to Guercino just to name a few.
Saint Catherine of Alexandria (Alexandria of Egypt, 280-290 – Alexandria of Egypt, around 305) is venerated as a saint, virgin and martyr by the Catholic Church, by the Orthodox Church and, in general, by all the Christian Churches that admit the veneration of saints. She is identified, together with Saint Margaret of Antioch and the Archangel Michael, as one of the Voices that inspired Saint Joan of Arc. She is considered one of the fourteen Helper Saints.
The painting was created by a 17th century master who represents Saint Catherine with the crown on her head and dressed in royal clothes to underline her princely origins. The palm in his hand indicates his martyrdom. The painting is not signed and deserves to be studied in order to hypothesize a possible attribution in consideration of the quality of the drawing and the harmony of the chromatic composition which has remained unchanged.
Upon examination with the Wood lamp, as shown in the photo, some small restorations emerge.
Framed by a beautiful non-coeval period frame, the painting of certain antiquarian value has been relined and is ready to be hung and admired in all its beauty.
Measurements of the painting: 72. 5 x 87cm
Overall dimensions with frame: 84 x 97. 5cm
Packaging will be carried out with the utmost care. Tracked and insured shipping. Any customs duties and taxes will be borne by the buyer.
