Antique painting, oil on canvas, XVII century, depicting Christ crowned with thorns. This evocative canvas has peculiar characteristics attributable to an artist of the Bolognese school and influenced by Reni’s models. It is in fact one of the most famous images by Guido Reni, whose fame is evidenced by different versions and copies, so as to become a sort of icon. Christ is depicted with the crown of thorns and the suffering gaze turned to heaven. The complexion is laid out in large brushstrokes of colour. The marked play of light and shadow only accentuates the pathos deriving from Christ’s human suffering. In fairly good overall condition considering the age of the painting, some scattered restorations and some slight peeling of the painted surface. There are no conservation issues. The original canvas is mounted on the antique frame, probably coeval to the painting, and has a fairly recent relining, which does not seem to need further intervention. Fine craquelure consistent with the painting’s age. With a beautiful and recent frame, golden and decorated with leaves pattern. Canvas size: 45 x 36 cm – Frame size: 59 x 49 cm.
