Antique painting, oil on canvas, dating between the late seventeenth and the early eighteenth century, depicting the praying Madonna. An evocative painting, made with a fluid technique and a remarkable quality of drafting. The stylistic and compositional features have peculiar characteristics attributable to an artist of the Italian school and probably active in Rome in the late seventeenth century. In overall fairly good condition, considering its age. There are some scattered restorations and some peeling of the surface, but nothing truly relevant. There are no conservation issues and the original canvas is supported by an old re-lining that does not seem to require restoration. Fine craquelure consistent with the painting’s age. The stretcher would appear to be antecedent to the relining and presumably coeval with the painting. With a beautiful frame from a fairly recent period, with flaws and shortcomings.
