\Artist: Scuola bassanesca del XVII secolo
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 81. 5_108_0_cm
The beautiful oil painting on canvas, 81. 5 x 108 cm, of the 17th century by the Bassanesca School shows a scene depicted from an episode of the Gospel of Luke (Lk 10, 38-42) in which it is narrated how the two sisters Martha and Mary Magdalene welcome Jesus into their home, but while Martha is busy with the housework to offer the best hospitality, Mary sits down to listen to the word of the Son of God. To the complaints of Martha, left without the help of her sister, Jesus replies : «Marta, Marta, you worry and get upset about many things, but there is only one thing that is needed. Mary has chosen the best part, which will not be taken from her ». The profound message of the episode lies in first of all taking care of the spirit and inner religiosity with respect to daily practical needs. But the painting, so animated and lively in the description of the large kitchen with a set table and food of all kinds, leaves very little room for the religious sense of the story, used as a pretext for a genre scene: for example, observe the figure of Jesus entering almost secluded in the large domestic environment, recognizable only thanks to the luminous halo that distinguishes the garment. The description of the environment is completely predominant: the large rustic kitchen opens onto a large hilly landscape, with a typically Venetian taste, and is equipped with various kinds of utensils, copper pots, tin plates, bowls and sieves; it is a cuisine where the opulence of food triumphs with a great variety of poultry and fish. A cook is bent in the foreground over the large pot in which she is cooking the soup which is greedily stared at by Lazarus already intent on consuming his meal. Certainly the vices of greed and gluttony are implied here as opposed to the virtues of the spirit and sacrifice, but the whole is a pleasant description of a domestic environment The painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and lawful origin from our gallery with photos as required by law. Shipping is safe and traceable.
