"The name Nazarenes was given to a group of German Romantic painters active in Rome at the beginning of the 19th century, who, initially stimulated by the artistic theories of Wilhelm August von Schlegel and Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder, rebelled against academic classicism, aspiring to a art renewed on religious and patriotic bases which stylistically took on an archaic character, given by a strong linear accent and the use of raw colour, applied with uniform brushstrokes, furthermore, it was characterized as a formal, almost philological recomposition of the style of fifteenth-century Italian artists from Beato Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Luca Signorelli, Perugino and above all the early Raphael. Some artists of the group also referred to Dürer and ancient German painting. "
