Scuola fiamminga (XVII) - Adorazione dei Magi

[ translate ]

Flemish school, 17th century
Adoration of the Magi
Oil on panel, 37. 5 x 28 cm – With frame, 46 x 36. 5 cm

As is known, the number of the Magi was never specified in any text, not even apocryphal. The reference to the Trinity is suggestive, and this was certainly the implicit value recognized by the theologians of the past, on the basis of which the ancient iconographers took part. Even the reference to the three ages of man, rendered with the different appearance of the three, from very young to more mature, contribute to strengthening the underlying doctrinal meaning: the reaching of the word of God to all men and the homage from the four corners of the world to the new born. The painting presents a defined process in the pictorial application, so much so that the brilliance of the colors and the strictly Flemish formalism lead us to suppose it on a copper base, rather than a panel. The weaves are mellow, the garments sculptural and the faces diaphanous. Even the distant sunset or new dawn in the distance are an almost inevitable reference in the Flemish handbook, as is the camel that shyly peeps out from the left side of the painting, a perfect representative of that exoticism brought by the Magi. In this the table echoes the production of Frans Franken II and family, industrious between the 17th and 18th centuries. The miniaturistic finesse of the drawing and the tonal enamel typical of his production recall the large workshop that the artist was able to set up in his wake. Small details, apparently of little importance, liven up the scene. Saint Joseph is depicted apart, according to canonical tradition, to remember the total faith in God respected by him and Mary. Baby Jesus, on the other hand, reaches out playfully like any newborn towards the older wise man, having stripped himself of his crown in front of the true King.

The frame is provided free of charge, therefore it cannot be a reason for return or complaint.

For paintings purchased abroad: after payment the procedure to obtain the export license (ALC) will be started. All antiques sent abroad from Italy need this document, issued by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The procedure could take 3 to 5 weeks from the request, therefore, as soon as we have the document the painting will be sent.
