Scythian Kelermes Akinakes Type Pommel Group

7th-5th century BC. A pair of openwork bronze sword pommels, both formed as a boar(?) with curved back. See for similar but not identical chapes Topal, D., 'kinakai of Kelermes type: New Discoveries in Central and Northern Bessarabia', Marisia, 2013, pl.5, no.4. 42.2 grams total, 40-46mm (1 1/2 - 1 3/4"). Property of a London gallery; formerly in a private Austrian collection formed in the 1980s-1990s. The pommels could possibly be related to Akinakes of Kelermes type, without bight on the handle, like a specimen from Tlia Necropolis, Georgia, grave 216. ?ernenko originally proposed this term (Kelermes type) for describing the massive ‘butterfly-like’ hilts and suggested as a model the sword from Kelermes burial (Kuban region"). Later, M. Pirtskhalava attributed to ‘so called Kelermes type’ a group of akinakai from Tlia necropolis, Georgia. [2, No Reserve]
