[Second Polish Republic, Józef Piłsudski] Set of 16 photographs documenting the preparations for Marshal Józef Piłsudski’s funeral. Circa May 18, 1935.

Dimensions: 6.2 x 6.2 cm each, mounted on a cardboard sheet measuring 32 x 20.5 cm. Good condition; natural signs of age and storage. Photographs preserved on the original album card.

A collection of 16 original black-and-white photographs documenting the city’s preparations for the funeral ceremonies of Marshal Józef Piłsudski (1867–1935) and the atmosphere of mourning following his death. Prints on photographic paper mounted on black album card.

The photographs show the streets of Kraków decorated for mourning: rows of tall flagpoles and black banners, buildings along the funeral procession route, and a monumental mourning gate bearing the initials “JP,” most likely erected near the train station. Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral are also visible.

The photographs form a photo essay taken from the perspective of a participant in the events surrounding the preparations for one of the largest state funerals of the Second Polish Republic. On May 18, 1935, the coffin containing the Marshal’s remains arrived in Kraków by special train, from where the funeral procession passed through the city center to Wawel. Józef Piłsudski was buried in the crypt of Wawel Cathedral.
