Secondary - Series M Type 45 - Animal Sceatta
710-760 AD. Obv: winged(?) horse-like animal right with berried spray before and below. Rev: anti-clockwise outwardly spiral paired-leaf vine with berries. S. 805; N. 142; cf. SCBI 63 (BM Anglo-Saxon I) 573; cf. SCBI 69 (Abramson) 566 (noted as 'imitative?' and possibly same dies?); cf. M. p.455, variant f and pl.21, 367. See Early Medieval Corpus, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (this coin"). 1.01 grams. . Found Cambridgeshire, UK. The normal examples for this series/type show the animal with a 'sinuous' curved back which this coin completely lacks; also, the normal examples do not seem to show a berried branch in front of the animal; SCBI 69, 566 describes the animal as 'horse or lamb?' and this is an interesting variant.
Condition Report: Good very fine; reverse a little off-centre. Very rare.
