Secrétaire à abattant - Brass, Mahogany, Marble

[ translate ]

A secretaire à abattant made during the Dutch late Louis XVI/Directoire period around 1795-1805.
Executed in the “Retour 'd Egypt” style whose inspiration and fashion followed Napoleon's campaign to Egypt from 1798 to 1801.

The secretary is constructed from oak & mahogany wood and glued with mahogany veneer.
At the top there is a single drawer with an inlaid brass key entrance and ring fittings decorated with lion heads.
Below it there is a flap with an interior behind it consisting of an open compartment with flat columns and underneath six mahogany veneer-glued drawers with brass knobs. The writing surface is inlaid with high-quality dark green English cloth.
The key entrance on the flap is decorated with, among other things, crossed quivers, a bow, laurel wreath, etc. The flap is flanked on either side by flat tapering columns decorated with Caryatid heads and feet.
Behind the two doors there is a single shelf and are equipped with key entrances decorated with ram's heads, bows, garlands, twisted ribbon, etc.
Under the flat plinth, the secretaire rests on square tapered legs at the front and all four legs have brass ball feet. In addition to all the refined cast ornaments, the secretary is richly decorated with brass profile frames.
All three locks have been replaced in the past and function with their keys. A number of old, non-disruptive restorations have been carried out in the past across the secretaire. The secretary is finished with a Belgian bluestone top.

The entire secretaire has its authentic wax finish, which has acquired a beautiful appearance and patina over the centuries and gives the whole a deep warm color and beautiful shine!
A stately and chic piece of furniture that is an eye-catcher in everyone's interior and is a pleasure to look at and work on!
