Sedes Sapientiae (Seat of Wisdom) - a statue of the seated Virgin Mary with Child - Terracotta - Second half 19th century

Antique large terracotta statue of Virgin Mary sitting on a throne, holding the infant Jesus with one hand and a scepter in the other hand. Jesus is holding the orb. This representation is known as Sedes Sapientiae (Seat of Wisdom) . Made in the second half of the 19th century in either Holland or Belgium. Signed on the back with E. Schillemans. The statue seems to be inspired by an early Italian Madonna. Polychrome painted. Height 50 cm, the base measures 23 by 27 cm. Weight 12 kgs. Condition: Fair, the arm of Jesus is repaired, the cross on the orb is missing.
