(Chernobyl): Personal Copy of the Admor of Skulen, Rabbi Eliezer Zusia Portugal, with Lengthy Chassidic Glosses

Sefer Maohr Einayim by Rabbi Menachem Nachum of Chernobyl with handwritten glosses and explanations from the Admor- Rabbi Eliezer Zusia Portugal of Skulen.
The sefer includes fifteen long handwritten passages as well as several additional glosses. The handwriting matches that of the Admor and his seal is located on the flyleaf.
There is a small note placed between the sefer’s pages that reads: “Explanation of the parchment amulet for protection of the home.” The lower margin reads: “This amulet, found in the siddur of the Admor, the ‘Ohev Yisrael.’”
Published in Lemberg, 1858, this volume is bound together with sefer Yosher Divrei Emes (Munkacz, 1905) .

Rabbi Eliezer Zusia Portugal (1898 - 1982) was a tremendous Torah scholar who was close to the admorim of the Ruzhin dynasty. He served as Admor and Rabbi of Skulen, Romania and later moved to Chernowitz, where he established a Beis Midrash. He actively assisted his Jewish brethren in Romania, specifically refugee children. While his home was poverty stricken, it was open to all. He eventually fled Romania to the United States where he established Torah institutions and became one of the most influential and admired admorim.
