Sehna
Second half 19th century, 222 x 145 cn, North West Persia, Kurdistan
Promoted by a number of provincial governors, production of elegant workshop carpets peaked in Sehna during the reign of the Qajars in the 19th century. Pile rugs and kilims made in Sehna advanced to status symbols among the Persian upper class. Knotted on a silk foundation, extremely fine in weave and with a cloth-like handle, this Sehna is a prime example. A dense, delicately drawn Herati design hermetically covers the midnight blue field, the large white central medallion and the midnight blue diamond enclosed within it. A vine of floral stems and small palmettes adorns the red main border. – Very good condition.
