"Quo Vadis?" by Henryk Seinkiewicz, translated from the Polish by Jeremiah Curtin, introduction by Harold Lamb. 32 exquisite illusttations by Salvatore Fiume. Published by the Heritage Press, New York in 1960.

Slipcase, hard boards, original decorated cloth with gold lettering blocked in green on the spine [slightly browned spine, a little wear of the lettering]; 6.3/4" 10.1/4"; frontispiece, xiii, + 525 pages + 20 sepia plates printed on one side only [blank back sides]; a few page corner folds, very good/ fine condition.

This novel tells a story of a love that develops between a young Christian woman, Lygia and Marcus Vinicius, a Roman patrician. It takes place in the city of Rome under the rule of emperor Nero, c. AD 64. Sienkiewicz studied the Roman Empire extensively before writing the novel, with the aim of getting historical details correct. Consequently, several historical figures appear in the book.

Salvatore Fiume (1915-1997) was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, writer and stage designer. His works are kept in some of the most important museums in the world, among which the Vatican Museums, the Hermitage of Saint Petersburg, the Museum of Modern Art of New York City, the Pushkin Museum of Moscow and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna of Milan.
