Seljuk / Byzantine Bronze Oil Lamp with Bird Finial

Circa 12th century AD
This lovely bronze oil lamp showcases a rounded central compartment elevated on a trumpet foot. The compartment is topped with a hinged flat lid featuring a small bird. The lamp includes a channelled nozzle with a circular spout. From the back of the body emerges a large loop, atop which sits an elephant facing the spout.
The Seljuks, a medieval Turkic dynasty, played a significant role in shaping the history of the Islamic world. Emerging in the 11th century AD, the Seljuks originated from the steppes of Central Asia. The dynasty began with Tughril Beg, establishing its dominion across a vast territory, including parts of Anatolia, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
