« Pour l’avenir, je mise sur Poliakoff », affirme Kandinsky lors de sa première rencontre en 1939 avec son cadet Serge Poliakoff, russe immigré à Paris comme lui. Ce que le pionnier de l’art abstrait a pressenti apparaît avec force dans l’œuvre de maturité Composition abstraite : par un syncrétisme vibrant de la forme avec la couleur, Poliakoff a composé une harmonie visuelle, ce qu’il appelle un « poème plastique ». Telles des strophes, des formes uniques s’assemblent dans un subtil équilibre pictural, dont rien ne peut être soustrait. Et les vibrations de couleurs, comme les syllabes d’un vers, créent le rythme poétique. Composition abstraite déploie ainsi la superbe palette lumineuse qui marque les dernières années du peintre : au centre, un rouge vermeil dominant, entouré d’un bleu nuit et d’un jaune d’or, apaisé par un blanc crémeux.
Libre dans l’exécution sans céder au lyrisme, linéaire sans être géométrique, l’œuvre échappe aux classifications d’après-guerre ; elle se construit de dedans, imperméable au monde extérieur. Car, celui qui fréquente à Paris le salon des Delaunay et Otto Freundlich, vise à une abstraction éthérée. La matière chromatique, posée en transparence, construit seule le mystère : « La peinture de Poliakoff est une de celles qui se prêtent le moins aux commentaires. C'est le monde du silence et de la "peinture pure" […] Mais son "petit miracle", c'est sans doute de savoir faire vibrer le silence » (in Michel Ragon, "Serge Poliakoff", Arts, 11 novembre 1964).
‘For the future, my bet is on Poliakoff,’ said Kandinsky when he first met his younger colleague Serge Poliakoff in 1939, a Russian immigrant to Paris like himself. The intuition of this pioneer of abstract art manifests powerfully in the mature work Composition abstraite. Through a vibrant synergy of form and colour, Poliakoff composed a kind of visual harmony, which he called a "visual poem". Like stanzas, unique forms come together in a subtle pictorial balance, from which nothing can be removed. And the vibrations of colours, like the syllables of a line of verse, create poetic rhythm. Composition abstraite thus deploys the superb luminous palette that characterised the painter's later years. In the centre, vermillion dominates, surrounded by dark blue and golden yellow, softened by creamy white.
Free in its execution without yielding to lyricism, linear without being geometric, the work defies the classifications of the post-war period. It is built from within, impervious to the outside world. Because the artist, who frequented Delaunay and Otto Freundlich in Paris, sought to achieve an ethereal abstraction. The colourful material, set in transparency, alone constructs the mystery: ‘Poliakoff's painting is among those least open to commentary. It's a world of silence and “pure painting” [...] But his “small miracle” was surely knowing how to make silence hum’ (in Michel Ragon, ‘Serge Poliakoff,’ Arts, 11 November 1964).
