Condition Report:
The work was inspected in its frame. The work is executed on a wood panel and tiny drying cracks are visible across the surface in line with the artist’s choice of media. There are pinpointed losses to the paint in a few areas. Under ultraviolet light examination, some areas of retouching are visible.

Produced in 1957, Untitled is a fervent testimony to the evolution of the abstract movement, under the influence of Serge Poliakoff. Produced during a pivotal period in the artist's career, this work is of great maturity since it crystallizes the key concepts that underlie much of the painter's works. Under the influence of Cubism and Orphism, Poliakoff developed a unique pictorial language that would earn him international recognition.
Untitled is marked by an exceptional use of colour. Poliakoff is considered as a precursor of the Color Field movement, a form of abstraction in which color itself becomes the main subject of the work. Untitled is notably composed of areas of color separated by lines, creating a sense of movement within the work. A guitar virtuoso, the Russian artist creates a rhythmic composition in which colours are arranged as though they were musical scores.
The artist also considers the relationship between shapes and colours. As Jean Leymarie points out, "all the originality of Poliakoff will come from the indissociability that he will discover between form, color, matter and light" (Jean Leymarie, Serge Poliakoff, Fondation Dina Vierny-Musée Maillol, 1995, p.21). The forms are delicately drawn and forge their way through the dark areas giving rise to a complex composition.
This work of great virtuosity was exhibited at the D'Eendt Gallery before joining the Collection of Rients Hendrik Dijkstra and being kept there for many years. Rients Hendrik Dijkstra started his career as a partner in a law firm and was also the founder of the famous magazine De Groene. After the Second World War, he took over the direction of this journal, imbuing it with an important cultural dimension. He also invited his artist friends, including Kees Kelk, Jeanne van Schaik-Willing, Jan van Keulen, Teun Koolhaas, A. Alberts, J.J.P. Oud, Victor van Vriesland, J.J. Vriend and Matthijs Vermeulen, to take part in his project. As an important promoter of art and culture, it is not surprising that Dijkstra developed an interest in the work of Serge Poliakoff.

Réalisé en 1957, Sans titre est un fervent témoignage de l’évolution du courant abstrait, sous l’influence de Serge Poliakoff. Réalisée lors d’une période charnière dans la carrière de l’artiste, cette œuvre est d’une grande maturité puisqu’elle cristallise les concepts clefs qui sous-tendent une grande partie des travaux du peintre. Sous l’influence du cubisme et de l’orphisme, Poliakoff développe un langage pictural unique qui lui vaudra sa reconnaissance internationale.
Sans titre est marquée par un usage exceptionnel de la couleur. Poliakoff est envisagé comme un précurseur de la technique du colorfield painting, une forme d'abstraction dans laquelle la couleur elle-même devient le sujet principal de l'œuvre. Sans titre est notamment composée de zones de couleurs séparées par des lignes, créant un effet de mouvement au sein de l'œuvre. En tant que virtuose de la guitare, l’artiste russe crée une composition rythmique dans laquelle les couleurs s’accordent telle une partition musicale.
L’artiste se penche également sur le rapport qu’entretiennent les formes et les couleurs. Comme le souligne Jean Leymarie, « toute l’originalité de Poliakoff viendra de l’indissociabilité qu’il découvrira entre la forme, la couleur, la matière et la lumière » (Jean Leymarie, Serge Poliakoff, Fondation Dina Vierny-Musée Maillol, 1995, p.21). Les formes se dessinent délicatement et forgent leur chemin au travers des zones plus ou moins sombres donnant lieu à un découpage complexe.
Cette œuvre d’une grande virtuosité fait l’objet d’une exposition à la Galerie D’Eendt avant d’intégrer la collection de Rients Hendrik Dijkstra et d’y être conservée pendant de nombreuses années. Ayant entrepris une carrière en tant qu’associé dans un cabinet d’avocat, Rients Hendrik Dijkstra est également fondateur de la revue De Groene. Au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale, ce dernier reprend la direction de ce journal lui conférant une dimension culturelle importante. Il invite également ses amis artistes dont Kees Kelk, Jeanne van schaik-Willing, Jan van Keulen, Teun Koolhaas, A. Alberts, J.J.P. Oud, Victor van Vriesland, J.J.
