A Chinese temple lion is a traditional Chinese architectural ornament. Usually carved from stone, they are also referred to as stone lions, or shishi ((zh) ) . They are known in colloquial English as lion dogs or foo dogs/fu dogs. The origins of these lions can be found in Chinese Buddhism. Often it concerns a couple, where the man has a ball and the woman has a lion cub, where they do not faithfully represent the lions, but with a symbolically designed appearance. The function attributed to these stone lions is to protect buildings (temples among others) against harmful spirits and other spiritual entities. They are also said to provide protection against people with bad intentions.
