LOT 43

Sevan Kazak, Southwest Caucasus, c. 245 x 190 cm

[ translate ]

Late 19th century. A subgroup of the Sevan Kazak carpets are the shield Kasaks, so called because of their imposing Maltese-like shield motif, which usually takes up the entire red ground, as in the present example. The light-coloured border frame is impressively decorated with abstract animal motifs, while colourful trees of life grow out of the red central field. Completely preserved, with a palm-sized repair, several traces of usage and partly trimmed pile.
Cf: Doris Eder, Kaukasische Teppiche, Munich 1985, ill. 18.
