Sevan Kazak
second half 19th century, 234 x 162 cm, South West Caucasus
The red field is entirely taken up by a green shield form with a white outline. Two highly abstract trees ascend vertically from the red cartouche at its centre. Four further trees adorn the red spandrels. The white main border shows colourful box motifs; the two blue guard borders each contain a simple zig-zagging line. Many antique examples of this striking Kazak type have survived, and can be subdivided into various groups by variations in their designs and styles.
