Eric Howard Wilson was born at Northampton on 23 September 1896. He studied at Northampton Grammar School and served in the Officer Training Corps between 1913 - 1915 and was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters on 12 May 1915 and briefly served at Bedford School of Instruction between 17 May 1915 to 12 June 1915. He served overseas in France from 29 May 1916 returning to U.K. on 2 September 1916. He then attended an Anti-gas Course in January 1917 before returning to France on 3 March 1917. He joined the Royal Flying Corps and was attached to 57 Squadron as of 17 October 1917. He became a Lieutenant with the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918 as a Lieutenant (Observer) and became Lieutenant "T" (Technical) on 13 June 1918. He relinquished his commission on 10 April 1919 on ceasing to be employed.

Wilson moved out to the Far East and worked as a school teacher for the Malayan Educational Service and additionally served as a Major in the Federated Malay States Volunteer Force as a Records Office. With the Japanese invasion he was captured at Singapore on 15 February 1942. He spent his remaining wartime service at Changi Prisoner of War Camp and was finally released on 11 September 1945.
