Sevillian School, 17th Century- The adoration of the infant Christ; oil on canvas, bears initials (lower right), 39.8 x 34.6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The 17th Century was a significant turning point for painting in Spain, with the likes of Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Murillo and Velázquez at the forefront of the Baroque revolution spreading across Europe. The present work is a charming example of the beginnings of this new way of depicting the Bible, with its pronounced use of chiaroscuro and its oval decorative motif, which surrounds the figures to great effect.
