Shahsavan Bag Face

[ translate ]

ca. 1800, 55 x 50 cm, South East Caucasus, Moghan-Savalan

This face of a Shahsavan bag woven in the finest sumakh technique originally belonged to a khorjin. A red rectangular central motif with an inner diagonal cross lies at the centre of the white field. Two dotted lines intersect in the middle, dividing the motif into four identical segments. The four outer arms point in the four cardinal directions. Due to the arrowheads at their ends, this design type is known as “arrow gul”.
Over the course of the years we have sold several examples of this type, both bag faces and complete double bags. This bag face was knocked down to a German collector at our auction A 48 in 1997. It is a first-rate nomad artwork with a magical aura that cannot be captured in a photograph.

GEWERBEMUSEUM BASEL (publ.), Alte Teppiche aus dem Orient. Basel 1980, p. 73 *** McMULLAN, JOSEPH V., Islamic Carpets. New York 1965, no. 58 *** KIRCHHEIM, E. HEINRICH, Orient Stars. Stuttgart - London 1993, no. 41 *** DODDS, DENNIS & EILAND, MURRAY L., JR., Oriental Rugs From Atlantic Collections. Philadelphia 1996, no. 98
