Shahsavan Bag Face
mid 19th century, 57 x 66 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan
A Khamseh Shahsavan bag face, finely woven in the sumakh technique. The red-ground central motif with an inner white cruciform lies on a midnight blue field ground, while four large trees interspersed with decorative motifs adorn the corners. A procession of small four-legged animals appears at the upper and lower ends of the field, and a human is depicted at the bottom left. Wertime has published another example of this group.
