Shahsavan Bag Face

Mid 19th century, 47 x 55 cm, South East Caucasus, Moghan-Savalan region

The four-and-one medallion design of this very finely woven, blue-ground sumakh bag face belonged to the traditional design repertoire of the Moghan Shahsavan. Several comparative examples found in literature illustrate the homogeneity of this specific group. Bag faces of this kind, often true masterpieces created by anonymous artists, are now in great demand among collectors due to their pictorial character and enigmatic symbolism. Always very similar in field design, the surviving examples mainly differ in the configuration of their borders. – Small rewoven areas, good condition.
