Shahsavan Verneh
late 19th century, 167 x 149 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan
This rare flatwoven cover with a dark blue foundation and brilliant white cotton sections was probably made by a Shahsavan tribal group in the mountainous region surrounding the city of Meshkin, i.e. close to the border with the Caucasus. In the field, offset design rows of either three or four hooked diamonds woven in the sumakh technique are spaced so widely apart as to leave large parts of the plainwoven foundation undecorated. This creates a relief effect. In the wide border, the foundation is completely covered by designs.
Condition
Some minor repairs in the area of the blue field. Good overall condition.
